We came here on 15th August. In this Silesian picturesque town there is a Jewish cemetery on the slope of the hill called Kopiec. The cemetery must have existed back in 1622 as the inscription found on the oldest uncovered tombstone says. Despite extremely hard conditions (mentioned above picturesque steepness) we managed, within 10 days, to clean the area of weeds and bushes, put up a lot of knocked over tombstones and clean them.
According to the stocks from the 80 –ties (taken by Jerzy Woronczak) there are 907 tombstones. It ’s worth mentioning that it is the oldest and one of the best maintained Jewish cemetery in Silesia. With the enormous help and support of local authorities we were able to make it look really good.
